Active fundraising from Team Valley Specsavers opticians

Staff at Specsavers Team Valley store have come together to raise funds for two vital local charities.

The staff at the outlet in Retail World Gateshead have been busy raising cash for Vision and Hearing Support and Gateshead Foodbank – both charities which are close to the hearts of the team.

The store concluded activities with a Charity Connections Day at the store on the 28th of March, welcoming customers to pop along on the day between 11am to 1pm. A variety of fun fundraising activities took place including a ‘Name the Unicorn’ competition that turned into a friendly competition within the team.

General Manager Katie Blakely kickstarted the fundraising by completing a half-marathon in Paris, and her team at the Team Valley store, led by optical assistant JoJo Hatfield, opted to support Katie’s efforts by cycling the distance from Paris to the Team Valley outlet.

The nearby Decathlon store donated an exercise bike for the trip that totalled 552 miles, taking the 14 strong team nearly seven days, with everyone squeezing in small rides during lunch hours, before and after work, and even some quieter times in store.

Directorship trio, Philip Bird, Martin Dilon and Naseer Mohammed, opened the Team Valley outlet in September last year to address significant post-covid demand in the area, spotting a need for expert optical and audiology services in the nearby community.

The store is open 9am – 6pm Monday to Saturday, and 9am – 5:30pm on Sundays, which has been well received by busy families in the area.

Jojo Hatfield, optical assistant at the Team Valley store, says: ‘Katie has put so much work in and the team wanted to show our support for all the amazing work she was doing.

‘We’ve had fantastic support from nearby businesses so I’d like to say a big thank you to Decathlon, The Works, Costa, M&S, The Waggon Inn, Asda, and Lush. They have all been so supportive of our fundraising. This wouldn’t be possible without them.

‘We’ve had terrific support since we first announced the opening of the store, often due to our later opening hours and the handy transport links and parking for people that don’t want the hassle of navigating the busy high street.

‘We have seen demand for our services grow in recent years and wanted to increase capacity whilst guaranteeing the same quality of service that we are known for at Specsavers – no matter which store they visit.’
